Objective |
Bio Energy Resources Ltd (BERL) is an initiative founded in 2006 and funded in part by large corporate social responsibility funding. Designed as an outgrower project growing Jatropha curcas trees across 10 districts in Malawi (Africa) as an additional crop for smallholder farmers. Farmers grow an average of 500 Jatropha trees as a boundary hedge around the fields of other crops so as not to interfere with food production. BERL guarantees to buy all the nuts harvested by the outgrower farmers. The nuts are processed in a central oil expelling facility and the oil is sold for blending with diesel at a ratio of 10% oil to 90% diesel to produce a bio fuel. The seed cake is sold to farmers as an organic fertiliser which has many added benefits for the enhancement in the growth of plants and the health of the soil. |

Objective & Description |
In 2017, the organisation "Our children and our Future (OCAOF)" implemented a Jatropha plantation with selected varieties of JatroSolutions (GreenFuels) in Uganda. To promote a sustainable development, the organisation planted hedges of Jatropha all around the Training Center itself and in a field close to the center. OCAOF planned to be independent of external energy supply systems. Besides, the plantation contributed to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The remaining press cake served as organic fertiliser to environmental advantages. Finally, employment was created by qualifying vocational trainees with regard to the plantation, processing and use of Jatropha. |
