Cultivar Development

Several years of precise selection and dedicated work are needed till a new cultivar is approved and released. High capital investments are required for research and development during this time. Our breeding programme comprises the following three phases from starting germplasm till commercial release:

  • Establishment of genetic variation:

    • Genetic variation is the basis of a breeding programme. We have conducted collection campaigns worldwide and have achieved an excellent starting germplasm for the breeding programme. Our germplasm contains genetic variation in economically important traits. In addition, our breeders are creating new variants by recombination of genotypes with better traits that translates into better cultivars.

  • Development of parental material:

    • The new variants created by recombination and segregation are then subjected to an intensive selection process. Only the most promising candidate cultivars are advanced from generation to generation till the final experimental cultivars are selected for field assessment in multi-environmental trials.

  • Throughout field testing of experimental cultivars:

    • Experimental cultivars are tested at different sites to assess their agronomic performance. Our global trial network comprises a wide range of climate, soil and agronomic management conditions. Therefore, we can precisely assess the yield potential of our cultivars, adjust their agronomic management and provide the necessary support to our customers to secure the profitability of their business.
